Machine gun patch era?

Could you please give me an indication of when this patch was worn?
The unique backing could indicate when this was produced.

Mike,

as the backing was never intended or produced as part of the badge and has been tacked on at a later date its hard to tell when the badge was produced but I would suggest WW2 rather than WW1.

There would be no harm in removing the backing, its not original to the badge.
