I am not so sure that there was any difference between Fany officers' badges and those worn by Troopers. I have my mother's uniform from her OR service and it is tailor made and of the same cut/design as a male officers uniform of the period. The badges are all bronzed and the cap badge has the usual officer type blades.

Fany made very little distinction between the ranks while off duty, for instance they had no separate messes and Troopers enjoyed officer privileges while visiting male units.

This is my mother as a Trooper in 1941 and her various badges and medals - the assorted collar badges are those of units to which she was attached. She finished the war as a Junior Commander ATS and Battery Captain of a HAA Bty RA.

Eddie. That's outstanding - a great item of family history. Have you identified the badges that surround the shoulder title - the crown looks like a DLOY WOs arm badge? Mike

Dave.

Mike,
I believe that crown is the coronet of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

That's a lovely collection Eddie.

Could that crown be the early ATS rank badge, I've never seen an original?

Hi Eddie,

Thank you for sharing your mothers items. How truly wonderful that you should have all these and that they are still in the family - a real treat to see.

Can I ask what the splendid badge is lower right with large 'H'..?

Cheerio,

Roy

A great collection. And I've never seen FANY/ATS ranks before, so I've learned something new today!

The badges around the Fany flash are (clockwise from top left) RA officers' collar (from my father's uniform), RASC ST, part of RIF cap, RAMC collar, Harrogate College prefect's badge, Cheltenham Ladies College prefects badge, White Hare Ski Club award badge from 1934 (when she was 20 years old).

The military badges were worn on the left side of the tunic to represent the units she was attached to. The White Hare Ski Club was formed in Andermatt in 1934 prior to the establishment of the Swiss Ski School.

Former Fanys who transferred to the ATS as officers were allowed to continue to wear the Fany flash on their ATS uniforms, they were also allowed to continue to wear their chin straps over the top of their caps. In point of fact my mother continued to wear her old Fany uniforms but changed the badges over to ATS. She, like so many others, was not best pleased at being forced into the ATS.

It is a strange coincidence that after commissioning in the ATS she was posted to a HAA Bty based on Hayling Island while her fiancee was an IG at the SofA on Salisbury plain. She was immediately sent on a GPO's course at Larkhill. I wonder how that happened

Eddie,
Many thanks - I would have guessed that the Ski Club badge was a French Chasseurs Alpin badge from the 1930s!!
Mike
