Australian Swagger Sticks

2 Attachment(s)
From time to time I have come across swagger sticks with Australian unit collar badges on them. Although they don't fall within my general theme of collecting I thought they were unique enough to purchase.

I have attached photographs of my three, from left to right they are:

11th Infantry Battalion, City of Perth Regiment (1930-1942 era)

Victorian Scottish Regiment (1900-1912 era)

The Kings School (Not sure of the era)

Does anybody else out there have any interest in swagger sticks?

Regards Dennis

I love the middle stick with the 303 bullets, I bet they were never fired!

The Victorian Scottish one is great, thanks for showing them.

Thanks for showing them. I have always been interested in them. I have three or four varieties of wartime rising sun swagger sticks, sorry no pictures available at present.
Also have some earlier ones for the 1st Aust Horse, NSWMR, and Med Staff Corps, also a riding crop for the NSW Lancers. The latter is already illustrated somewhere on the Forum because I asked unsuccessfully if anyone could trace the owner whose name is on it. The elephant head badge could have been used any time from 1885 to 1939 and the NSWL was split into three militia ALH regiments from 1903 onwards which all used variations of the badge. The badge is still in use today but riding crops are no longer in fashion.
I would be interested in any others that might be available.

Yes I have one in the collection and 2 walking sticks or swagger sticks depending on length .

59th Bn - Brunswick and Coburg

AFC stick made out of crashed plane prop with AFC badge belonging to A.G.Packer 4th Sqd.

RFC stick / swagger to Lt John Henry Smith 8 Victories invalided July 1918 who died in Canada

The 59th would appear to be WW2 since it mentions a 1930-42 militia regiment. A totally new one to my other three rising sun patterns.

NSW Lancers riding crop: original owner details appreciated

I found my photos of the NSWL riding crop. I have posted it on the Forum before but no one could tell me anything about H G Burgess. He could have been a member of the Lancers any time from 1885 to 1930. Two other regiments (4th and 5th ALH) were formed from the original country squadrons in 1903 and they all used the elephant head design. Not easy to research.

Hi Kingsley,

I have been through my Army Lists but it does not appear that a H G Burgess held a commission at any stage so I can't trace him by that means.

No evidence of him serving in Boer War, Great War, or WW2 either. The only Great War H G Burgess was posted as a deserter and he had no previous military service on attestation.

Keith, many thanks for trying to trace him. The Lancer Barracks Museum did not have any records either. As a "Gentleman of the Light Horse", he was probably an ordinary trooper not an officer.
