Makers Mark F&S

I was looking through some badges earlier today. i noticed that Solihull School was marked F&S.
I presume that this is Firmin & Sons but i dont think ive come across it before.
Can anybody throw some light on this ?

Mike there was a thread posted on F&S yesterday and what you presume is correct Firmin and Son it is.
Regards Tony.

Hi Mike,

It is a modern Firmin & Son mark and can be found hidden away on some of the Scottish badges like the Argyll and Sutherlands.

Also it is found twice on the Aberdeen Uni OTC badge and on a lot of the 'new metal' badges.

Regards

Chris

Hi there,

Weirdly enough, I also found the "F&S" makers mark on a Silver hallmarked button, which I think is a Police button. See Scans. You can also see that the button is also stamped with the more usual button backmark of "FIRMIN LONDON" and the hallmark has been apllied over the top of this.
I think from the hallmark that it is from Birmingham 1947. The KC also help dates it to pre 1952.
So "F&S" is reasonably recent but still at least 63years old.

Cheers

Ian

I have a pair of GURKHA ENGINEER collar badges with the small F&S on them.

The Anchor & Lion donate Birmingham, and the shape of the Z makes it 1949

Cheers Mike,

My memory isn't what it was. I was close but not close enough!

I have bookmarked that site - very useful. Thanks

I think from the looks of things F&S started life as a Makers Hallmark on Silver Badges!

Certainly does Mike and carried over onto late manufacture A/A badges and the 'new metal' items.

I have only ever seen the shortened F&S mark mainly on Collar Badges, not on Cap Badge sliders which still seems to be mainly FIRMIN or FIRMIN & SONS where it will fit ?
