Arty HB "Royal Canadian Artillery"

A question on Arty Hat Badges. this Hat Badge is "Frosted Gold" with three "Tangs on the back (12,4 and 8 o'clock). It seems to match the MS.12 (Mazeas - Pre -1914 Badges), Cross (Corps Badges 140-1-3) and Mazeas (Canadian Badges 1920-1950 S.1. So which one is it????
I think by the "finish" -Frosted Gold, it is the 1920-1950 badge but they seem to be all so similar.
opinions - - anyone???

hi larry
getting away from the initial question you ask, i have a question for you.
a little while ago, i saw a standard ww1 pattern british artillery badge with the rotating wheel, in brass with a slider. the strange thing was the title UBIQUE above the cannon (this is readable from the rear) had an overlay which read CANADA.
do you or anyone know of this happening?

1. Presumably Canada produced their KC Artillery badge (as depicted) in 1902 like UK. Howeve the honour "Ubique" was given in 1926 to replace "Canada" over the gunwheel. Thus the badge overlaps in time the 3 reference books mentioned.

2. Cross, on page 194, states, "With insufficient time to produce new dies, Gaunt produced a Canada scroll and overlaid it on the "Ubique" on three different Imperial Gun badge issues - those of GB, the TF and New Zealand - to produce a Canadian badge.

3.Interestingly, I have a KC "NZ" top scroll "rubbed out" and "FIJI" stamped in.

Interesting! Your badge seems to combine two badges within the Cross reference (page 194 [140-1-2], page 195 [140-1-3]) the rotating wheel is noted as an Officers badge (page 195), the overlay "CANADA" is on three (or more) other countries badges. I have on of the rotating wheel badges, but it is stamped CANADA, I have never seen the overlay CANADA badge.

As the folding tangs did not find usage after 1919 I would place this fine looking badge in the 1914 -19 era.Although that gilding is known of Gaunt Montreal badges pre 1914 but would certainly be a carry over into the CEF PERIOD
