9th CEF - this could be interesting...

A "9th" CEF badge up on the 'bay. A mock-up for sure - a brass "9" spliced onto what was originally a 1st or 2nd badge (I'm guessing). It will be interesting to see how this does!

Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian:
That seller is obviously not posting the questions he is receiving from buyers because I'm sure he has received many from people indicating that the badge is a fake. It is such an obvious fake....and already at $100.00! It will be interesting to see what the winning sucker will pay.

$6000 badge fake!!

Looking at the back of my Hick's-made 1st Bn badge I'm convinced this is what this "9th" badge started life as. It even looks like the person who faked this tried to grind out the reverse stamping where the "ONT" part of the 1st badge was.

For those of you not familiar with CEF badges, the 9th Bn badge is one of the rarest and most valuable badges. A real one would set you back about $6,000!!!

Cheers, Ian

I just sent the seller an e-mail - let's see!

Got a reply - seller says "he didn't say it was an original and it might make a nice filler for a collector" - true, but it is listed under "Original Period Items". Oh well, caveat emptor.

Ian, I think you're right, here's the back of a 1st I used to own, he may have tried to flatten a bit of it out !! Let's see what it goes for, cheers, Wilf.

Hello guys,
Please excuse my ignorance of Canadian badges, what is it that makes the 9th Bttn so rare? Thank you
Matti

9th Hat Badge

The 9th battalion sailed with the first contingent but when it arrived in the UK it was turned into a reserve BN. There were just under 1200 original personnel in the BN but most wore either their original hat badges or the General Service badge. The 9th that is so expensive ($6K++) was a special made badge. It was not the common badge worn.

Thank you LLWill, this is where the forum comes into its own.
