Trench or police whistle?
 

My father has a whistle with regp bukta B2 stamped on the barrel at the top of the whistle has patent 5727-08 attached is a leather wrist strap. I’m trying to research it but just coming to a dead end. I’m thinking it a police whistle but not seen any with these markings on. Any ideas?

On another note i have one with C.W.S stamped on it any ideas what that stands for?

the whistle is stamped REGD (registered design) BUKTA - Pretty sure it is made by Alfred de Courcy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_De_Courcy

Body stamps
De Courcy did not stamp whistles with his company name prior to 1906 but prior to this year supplied many orders to railway, Police, Army, Navy, Asylums, Fire Brigades, sporting goods companies, arm distributors and hardware stores as well as for other makers as W Dowler & Sons and B Lily & Sons. Many of his whistles prior to 1906 are easily identified by shape, construction and characteristic designs.

While his business and reputation grew he first stamped whistles A De Coursy & Co. Frankfort Street Birmingham in 1906.

Ahhh its a D not a P i need my eyes testing. thank you so much for taking the time to reply. So this is before 1906? So being stamped Bukta would this be a boys scouts whistle? I didn’t even think of that i just thought it was military or police.

Google search came up with: THE INTIALS C.W.S. STAND FOR THE CO-OP WHOLESALE SOCIETY - THEY SET UP THEIR OWN AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS IN WW2, AND THESE WERE ISSUED TO THEIR WARDENS

When I saw it with my father things I thought it looked nice. He’ll be fascinated when I tell him his WW1 military/ police whistle is actually Boy Scouts pre 1906. Thanks again. 😊

Re the Boy Scouts whistle, You have to remember that the trial scout camp was held on Brownsea Island in Poole harbour in 1907 so any whistle pre 1907 is not a scouting item.

Ahhhh I didn’t know that... hummm! So is it back to square one with trying to sus out what this whistle was used for... it did seem to read bukta was to do with the scouts... any ideas? Most interesting this little whistle track down is becoming 😊

Bukta's own advertising for Scouts Kit mentions "since 1907".

The whistle being discussed is stamped B2 , one with a similar Bukta marking but stamped B3 was described as "Bukta police whistle" when sold at auction in January 2020.

NB. A version called 'The City' has a patent number 6727-08 stamped on it which seems to indicate that minor modifications/improvements were made by manufacturer/retailers.
