Essex ACF embroidered badge

Can anyone shed any light on this one please?

It is contemporary with the shiny gold metal badge that was introduced in the early 1970s by the Coy Commander. As a cloth badge my hypothesis is worn by the officers / adults and the metal badge by the cadets, but would love to confirm or refute that.

Total fabrication- please post it to me immediately to be placed in isolation.

Seriously, FS No 146 April- June 1987 has an article upon Essex ACF badges post-WW2.
Between 1970 and 1973 an embroidered cap badge was worn consisting of gold wire on black. The badge was the seaxes of Essex below which was a scroll ‘Essex A.C.F.’.

Keith Hook had one in his collection (photo attached).

I wonder if they were made in the same manner as the Norfolk ACF & Norfolk Girl Guides badges, by a company who normally specialised in ships tallies.

Nice try Stephen but i think I'll hold on to mine 😀

It was Keith who first made me aware of it - and then by chance I saw this one buried within a job lot of cloth badges!

Thanks for the confirmation. Did FS say whether worn by all ranks or just adults / just cadets. I'm assuming metal for cadets and cloth for adults based on the numbers seen. Then again if only worn for three years it could well be cadets with few surviving...

Love the knowledge that exists within this forum. Many thanks again for your help and confirmation on dates.

No further information available in FS, sorry.

Spoke with some former Sqn members last week who had both been in the ACF c. 1971-73 who stated that the cloth version was worn by County HQ staff and the gold metal badge by the cadets.

Glad we got rid of them . I was in the Essex ACF from 1966 to 1993 from cadet to officer.
