Interesting Hat Found On Local Market!

Was quite pleased to find this souvenir bush hat on a local market stall a couple of days ago. It originally belonged to a lady by the name of “Vera” who joined the ATS during WW2 and remained in the WRAC into the 1960s. Judging by the ribbons she was awarded the 1939-45 War and Defence Medals in addition to the Regular Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. Couple of nice patches on here including 2 King’s crown printed staff college patches. She retired in the mid 1960s as a Captain

Nice find, some good honest formation signs there.

Staying for a few days in Thoresby Hall Hotel where much to our surprise we find there is a military museum. We also passed Worksop College where they have an excellent CCF but found nothing like that hat on our travels, must continue looking.

Very local to me Peter. The CCF at Worksop College is very overrated ! The hat turned up at Retford Market on Friday morning, always worth a look if you’re in the area, at least three traders with badges and medals and odd bits of militaria on other stalls (this came from a general dealer rather than a militaria dealer - don’t understand why none of them had bought it). The dealer also had some of “Vera’s” badges including WRAC Captain’s rank slides and loads of her sports medals from WW2 and later. Hope you enjoyed Thoresby. The Nottinghamshire Cavalry and Yeomanry museum is a bit of a hidden treasure . Last time I was in there there was a selection of military clothing hung up on pegs for children to dress up in - amongst the garments was a WW2 battle dress with printed Pegasus airborne formation badges on the sleeves (you could see where the wings had been removed too!).

Thanks Paul,

Will have to try Retford next time we are in the area.
