RAF mess dress
 

Good morning,

I have found this mess jacket of a RAF squadron leader (I think). There is a chain with strange buttons with Arabic design (Yemen ?). Have you an idea about them ? Thank you

How about a Yemeni officers who trained in the UK and was awarded RAF wings. Whilst training he could well have worn RAF style Mess Dress.

The button looks like the Sultan of Oman's Air Force 1959-1990

Thank you for your advice. Omani Air Force seems to be the right track . But the jacket and waiscoat have classical RAF buttons

Could be an officer who was seconded to the Omani AF and just used a couple of the buttons as a souvenir.

The buttons are the type used by the Sultan's Armed Forces 1958-, later The Sultan of Oman's Land Forces.

The button twinned with a chain is the standard method of fastening the front of the mess dress jacket. I agree with Alex - he was probably with the Omani AF for a while and this is his way of showing it.

I like the idea of showing a bit of individuality, 'many' is the amount of Mess Dress waistcoats i have seen personalised - Regards

I have a pair of those buttons on a chain which tried to hold the front of my white mess jacket closed while I was serving in the Sultans of Oman's Artillery.

I'd go with the souvenir of service with SOAF theory.

I have received my RAF mess dress today. There was a label in waiscoat's pocket, with the name of Sqn Ldr Boulden. Would it be possible to find a coonection between Oman and this officer ?
