WW1 POW Scots Guards
 

Hi

Can anyone please tell me what the RAP means plus the other reference? His initials should be W.E. Neat.

Report(Record ?) Allied Prisoners ...... of War ?

Found a site which has :
" an edited roll of 278 men serving with the Scots Guards, who were captured by the enemy and became Prisoners of War on or before the 25th December 1914."

It lists 8632 Guardsman W Neat (no other initial).

It also notes :
"This data has been transcribed from the following source at the Imperial War Museum:

1. B.O.2 1/69. This is a 6-page typed list to Sir Enest Goodhart sent from the officer i/c records, Scots Guards, Buckingham Gate, London SW1 dated 10th January 1921".

The International Committee of the Red Cross website indicates that the second number is :

"Reference number of the list containing the prisoner's name"

NB. "Some cards indicate a reference number but this register does not exist any more. So, you will find no more information about this person."

Looking on the ICRC website they mention :

1. Index cards
These cards were established in Geneva by the Prisoners of War International Agency, for each person registered in the lists that the Agency received from the belligerents countries.

The RAP you show appears to be part of an official stamp , other index cards show it in full : RAP. ou INT. , so it is possibly to indicate that the card has been checked/transcribed. (as French would be used RAP/rapport/report ?)

Some cards simply have RAP handwritten in one corner.

That is an International Red Cross Committee POW paper, Walter Neat 2nd Scots Guards was missing upon the 28th of October 1914 during to first Ypres and was subsequently confirmed as having been captured by the wretched Hun.

Interestingly, I note that Neat had been awarded a stint of Field Punishment No 2 for urinating in a trench nine days before finding himself in the bag.

What do they say? "Never turn down the chance for a pee or a cup of tea..."
