He is wearing his coronation medal and Queen's South Africa Medal with five clasps. Hutton had served in the Boer War with the 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry Contingent. Private Hutton's hat displays the white metal second pattern Rising Sun badge which would have been fixed to green backing.
