my anodised badge collection
 

Hi Members,

I am looking to expand my anodised badge collection so I have put them onto a simple web page :

could send me a picture of the front , back and makers mark so that I may search for and purchase and add to my collection.

(the pages only use low res pictures but my take some time to load depending on your connection speed)

Shouldn't the Monmouth School badges all be CCF rather than OTC ?

( School OTC`s became part of the CCF in 1948 )

Chris, you've sure gone to a lot of effort in cataloging yr collection in such a comprehensive way and it is a great layout.

Congratulations on such good work and, without any intention to be critical, please may I just info that these black(ened) badges are all available in anodised black?

Sorry I can't name all manufacturer's marks here; am working from some dodgy fotos of my collection, as I'm away from home right now.

Also, Gurkha Military police is available in Silver anodised, as well as gold anodised. Both Firmin London.

For the rest of the info you seek, virtually everything you need to know is tabulated and/or illustrated in Chris Marsh's excellent book - "Anodised Aluminium: The 'No Bull' Cap Badge of the British Army", which I commend to you as the best source for researchers and collectors of good ol' Agonised Ally cap-badges.

Just to add to the 17th/21st Lancers & QRL :-

There is a proper Dowler (see below).... the one you have is the Firmin made but Dowler marked (1980s - Chris's book mentions something about why?)

I have 1 Shaw Munster AA (there is a poor strike version with a lower MM as well..... not sure if you could call that a variant though?)

I have 4 variants of the Smith & Wright Ltd AA

I have 5 variants of the Gaunt AA (there is also a Black AA, as mentioned by William above) - * Included is the Firmin made but Gaunt "Ltd." marked

I have 2 variants of the LB&BCo AA (not including marked and unmarked sliders)

I have 5 variants of the "New Post 1960" Firmin AA (6 if you include the Dowler marked one)

I have 4 variants of the "Old" Firmin AA

* The variance is in the back image .... the Dowler Motto is the only one with a change in the face and the back of the motto (as explained above).

Good work indeed!

I am particularly impressed with your decision to, quite correctly, label non-authorised badges for what they really are i.e. unofficial commissions. Beware thought; you will, in all probability, get some grumpy collectors and dealers who will tell you otherwise. I suggest you stick to your guns until they can supply some official doco, NSN, CB No. Pattern No. etc. which is most unlikely.

With regard to a few points raised by previous members. Beware of factory 'cock-ups' - these are often sold as 'rare variants' which I suppose they are. However, I would suggest they have little value and are in no way official.

Also, all blackened badges, with the exception of those badges officially designed as black in colour, are again unofficial commissions. While some were authorised at regimental level (The King's Regt most certainly was) the majority are dealers 'knock offs'. If collectors wish to collect these then all well and good. This issue is covered on page 193 under Subdued Badges of Anodised Aluminium: The 'No Bull' Cap Badge of the British Army.

The Monmouthshire School badge. I cannot comment on pre A/A era items but at A/A level at least, this badge is not the Monmouthshire School CCF but the 2nd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment (TA). The school wore this badge as it was affiliated to the Monmouthshire Regt TA battalion. Also, I have handled the pattern card of this A/A badge in the Imperial War Museum and it is recorded as the 2nd Battalion item. To confirm - this badge is also covered in:

MoD Guard Force badges are also made by Timings and there is a silver a/a version of the badge too.

Also to expand further,the sealed pattern card held by the IWM is down as War Dept Messengers rather than MOD guard force which im sure came later.

your RUR Queens Crown with round loops north and south is a kilt badge worn by The Royal Irish Rangers and later The Royal Irish Regiment. It is worn on the right side of the kilt along with the badges of The Royal Inniskilling Fusilier and The Royal Irish Fusiliers all with loops.
