Royal Field Artillery - tribute
 

A couple of years ago I made an appeal to the forum as I was trying to find out more about my Grandfather's WW1 service - Sgt Percy Service RFA - 70291. I was trying to find out the actual battery or brigade he served in ( the records had been destroyed in WW2 ) - thanks to charlie962 I discovered the national roll which said "P.G. SERVICE Sgt RFA Volunteering in January, 1915, he crossed to France in the following year, and served there until the close of the war. During this period he took part in the Battles of the Somme, Arras, Messines, Passchendaele, and those of the German Offensive, and subsequent Allied Advance of 1918. Retained on special duties for some months after the Armistice he returned to England for demobilisation in July, 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 19, White Street, Pendleton."
It was a real breakthrough and I was very grateful for although I still didn't have his brigade details at least I now knew something of the battles he had fought in. I purchased 4 "battle brooches" over the next couple of years and wondered how I was going to display them and then I acquired a memorial plaque frame from another forum member and the result is as you can see in the photos. I'd done a frame many years ago with cap badge and "his" medals . The medals are not his - no one knows where they are - family legend is that he "threw them away" - if they were to ever turn up I'd pay a large premium for them ! Tim
