Hi have this button from the 59th 2nd Nottinghamshire Regiment but I am unsure of the markings on the back of the button I’ve not seen it before... is it a makers Mark or is it just part of the decoration of the button?

Thanks for you help I hope the photos have uploaded ok 😊

Pre 1881, 59th Regiment of Foot. I cannot tell you anything about the back mark, but it is a quality button.

Hi there,

As Lazio says the button is a Mess Waiters Button for the 59th Regiment of Foot and subsequently post 1881 the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Regiment. These buttons come in large (approx 25mm) & small (approx 16mm) size in both Gilt and Silver plate.

What size is the button please?

I have seen the silvered version of the button in both large and small sizes with that backmark but so far have only seen the large Gilt button with that backmark. But that is probably just down to bad luck on my part rather than any omission by the manufacturer.

As to which button manufacturer/Military Tailor used that backmark and during which timeframe I am afraid that I don't know.

Ian

Hi Ian

Thank you for your info it’s a 25mm, not see a smaller one it’s an interesting mark on the back which I hadn’t seen before... as it’s post 1881 would you know roughly year range for it... having a makers make would make dating it a lot easier perhaps...
