Lieutenant Colonel Devonshire Regiment
 

I've had this for a while and I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or move it on as I'm accumulating too much.

There were quite a few Lt Cols in the various Devonshire Regiment Battalions, I would be nice if I could work out who he was?

So perhaps there are some clues in the medal ribbons.

Am I right that the Territorial Efficiency medal was only awarded to other ranks who had done 12 years service in a TA battalion after 1930?

And that no Devonshire Regiment Battalion served in N Africa in the qualifying period for the Africa Star, but would the 2nd Battalions time in Malta or the 4th Battalions in Gibraltar have qualified?

The Gilgil country club tickets I found in the pocket were presumably from a period of leave in Kenya?

Probably an obvious question but it may be worth asking: is there a tailor's label sewn into an inside pocket?

Sorry I should have mentioned there is a label but it doesn't have a name written on it.

The labels that do have names are often very faded but they are usually a good starting point for further research.

Is it possible that this is a 2nd Lt's jacket and someone has added Gilt Crowns. The one crown I can see doesnt look in keeping with the pip?

Hi Simon, very possible, also there is no third set of holes to indicate it went through the captain stage.

But it came to me like this so I have to start from what I have.

According to British Battles and Medals by Major LL Gordon, my copy is a 5th edition dated 1979,
"The Africa Star was awarded for 1 or more days service in north Africa between 10th June 1940 and 12th May 1943, both dates inclusive".

ARMY
"The qualifications is the entry into North Africa on the establishment of an operational unit.
Service in Abyssinia, The Somalilands, Eritrea, Sudan, and, be it noted, Malta was included, but not that in West Africa".

Allowing that the book is very specific I'd take it that it does not cover Gibraltar. However I can only quote what the book says rather than try to interpret what it states.

Ive had another look at the "Book of Words" and it appears that none of the WW 2 stars cover operations in Gibraltar. Just the same you've got one out of 2, so that's a 50 / 50 result.

There must have been several garrisons and bases around the world which weren't covered by a particular star, rather unfair on those who served really, but in this case it may help to narrow the field a little.
