I have been looking at one of those pictorial history of WW2 sets of books.

I found an illustration of an RAF pocket badge that is a new one on me. It was worn by: "operational airmen defending Malta".

BWEF,
finally got a chance to dig out the information.
To quote 'Eagles Recalled' byWarren Carroll......
"A small silver Maltese cross, hand engraved with: Malta on left; Ft,er(Fighter) on top; 1943 on right, and SQDRN on bottom. On bottom of the reverse side is 185.
Made for 185 Squadron RAF, based at Hal Far from May 1941 to May 1943 and Qrendi, Malta from June 1943 to September 1943.
Although not an official award this little piece of metal embodies all that is brave.......not authorized to be worn on the Uniform.
These crosses were created by the local Jewellers and/or requested by Squadron members as a souvenir. Possibly some civilians gave them to personnel as gifts. It is believed they were allowed to be worn while on the Island.[ hence the pic ?]Authorities would not allow them to be worn anywhere else."
Hope this helps ?
Cheers !
Steve

PS: I remember seeing an item like this on Ebay a while back, but did not know what it might have been,at that time. :(
