2023

This year's dated Poppy Pin is already available from PoppyShop , it is getting earlier every year ! Also , having them available so early will surely effect Branches as a lot of people used to get their dated pins from their local poppy sellers during Remembrance Week.
. |
I am a Poppy Appeal Organizer and feel that pins should be made available for local sale at the same time as the Poppy Shop, as it is it will probably be another month or two till I get my early shipment.
Re re-sale of Poppy Pins, The RBL Poppy Appeal made it money on original pin when first sold and then becomes 'Second Hand' to be disposed of by its new owner as they see fit. As a Poppy Appeal Organizer I receive dated pins and specials in bags of 50 for re-sale or distribution via approved outlets. These remain 'New' till sold. Since last year PAO's have no longer been able to ask a set price for poppy goods but thankfully donations have not suffered that much. |

Got hold of another "Legion Companion" badge and also , though not RBL , a nice pin that reminds me of some of the 'battlefield' (Ypres/Thievpal ?) ones.

And they are already being sold on eBay for £14.99 + £2.99 postage ! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115671012082 . |

Got my 2023 example this morning to compare with earlier editions and bulk 2023 pins when I receive them
Also noticed dated pins from 2006 to 2022 priced from £5 to £110 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224842163756 What do you feel about the costings? |

2007 at £110.00 down to 2011 at £40.00 is high but some people are willing to pay those prices for fakes ! The fact he has 3 or 4 each of the 2008-2011 still available shows that they are not selling very quickly . The pins 'look' genuine but it is a minefield with all the fakes that are around but if you are lucky there are still some great bargains around. I got this lot in November for a ridiculous price ! :D . I now have two full sets plus a third lot that is only missing a 2006 pin. |
I am really fumped at those who make fakes, but understand the need for greed by some people. But I am surprised to read that they even fake the poppy pins!!!
Just a comment due tot he mention of fake poppy pins, and I am sure I am not alone. Terry |

Mike_vee, I went to the site you gave the link to in your last post just to see what was on offer. Was surprised to see so much being peddled bearing the cypher of His Majesty King Charles 111. It was my understanding that the “Royal” crown or crown depicted in the reigning monarch’s cypher is a copy rite design and therefore is subject to certain laws as regarding reproducing them. Can you set me straight? Best regards, David J.
|
Quote:
1. I don't think the actual 'cypher' is a registered trademark so , unlike the RBL two petal red poppy , it can be reproduced legally. 2. Copyright comes into play when items (badges/souvenirs etc) are produced. If a design is "registered" then anyone copying/faking that design (without permission) could be prosecuted . When the RBL brought out their new branding the "logo" would have been registered as a trademark , so the style , colour , font etc could not be reproduced on items without their permission. . |
Thanks Mike, even a guess is better than no answer at all! It became an issue where I live because a security company uses a reproduction of Her Late Majesty’s crown in their badge (and have done so for the last approx. 10 years.) A letter was sent to local Federal M.P.’s, to no avail. All that transpired was a load of government “Bafflegab”! And no definitive answer. Pretty weak and sloppy! D.J.

Official information What are the criteria to receive permission to use the Royal Crown? Edit : From British Registered Designs Act 1949 : Quote:
Reality ! The British Legion did not recieve their "Royal" title until 1971 when their membership badges had the crown added but from their founding in 1921 cap badges of various groups (Bandsmen/Parking/Standard Bearers) had the QVC crown and collars had the Kings crown. |
Again Mike, you never cease to amaze me with the speed in which you find an answer to so many queries on this forum. You certainly are a most respected and valuable member in my opinion. I guess that “Reality” wins the day! David J.

"The Poppy Lady"
I just received my copy of this fantastic book , the author (Heather) spent many years researching it and setting up a fantastic website which I feel is the best reference site for information about Remembrance Poppies. The photo shows some of my collection. . |

Spot the Fakes !
1 Attachment(s)
This lot on eBay , asking price £215.00 but as I put it on my "watch list" I could buy them for £195.00 !
In my opinion the whole top row , apart from the 2010 , are fakes. The 2006 is the wrong size. The 2007/2008/2009 are copies that started appearing last year. The 'double dated' 1911-2011 has been claimed to be a 'trial' version but I can find no proof. The 2012 has the leaf on wrong side , leaf was moved to 11 o'clock in 2011. I wonder if anyone will be fooled ! . |
Noticed them, and agree with all you say.

Good Job(lot) !
5 Attachment(s)
Spotted a job lot that included a couple of (possibly) genuine early poppy pins. It was "buy it now" and a reasonably fair price , so I took a chance and bought it.
Apart from the ones in the photos there were another eight , unrelated , badges. They just arrived , the 2006 and 2007 poppy pins are genuine :D. Apart from the bowling club ones all the others are ones I already have but will be handy for swaps/trades. With a single 2006 poppy pin (genuine and fake) going for £50.00 - £100.00 I definitely got a great deal. . |
Congrats Mike, always a good feeling to come up 7's!

By getting the 2006 poppy pin in that joblot I now have a complete "spare" set of small dated pins. :D
I'm not planning on splitting the set or selling them on eBay , I'd rather keep hold of them and at some point let them go to a genuine collector for a fair price. Of course , I keep my eye out and if I can pick up any others for a reasonable price I'll snap them up to trade/swap for ones on my wanted list. ;) . |

This one , from National Museum of Singapore , was found during the excavation, recovery and burial of victims of ‘Operation Sook Ching’ (1942) and the Japanese Occupation (1942–1945) in Singapore which took place between 1963 and 1966. . |

Finally got hold of a 2013 RMP Poppy Pin , that's another set complete and one less on my "wanted list". :D

Just saw a photo of the 2022 "Poppy Supporter" badge , I spend enough on RBL/PoppyShop badges but with money being tight I can't afford the "monthly donation" to qualify as a supporter. . |
Mike, you do not mention in this post if, or not, that poppy supporter pin is put out by the R.B.L.. in Canada the Poppy symbol is “owned” or under copyright to the Royal Canadian Legion. Regards, David J.

Hi David , the "supporter" pins are official RBL issue and are given to people who agree to donate (at least £10.00 per month) to the Poppy Appeal.
https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get...B&gclsrc=aw.ds The RBL has the copyright to the "red 2 petal" poppy design/registered trademark. When they really started of enforce the copyright (2010 onwards) numeous sellers/organisations were forced to adopt different designs (3 or 4 petals). On 1 January 1994 the words on the central black button were changes from "Haig Fund" to "Poppy Appeal". If anyone is interested in the history of the Poppy Appeal (in the UK and overseas) I would recommend this site : https://poppyladymadameguerin.wordpress.com/ Heather , who spent over 7 years researching and developing the site , recently publish an excellent book (shown with some of my poppy collection). . |

Poppy Shop has just released a Korea pin.
The standard "generic" design , doesn't say if there is anything on the rear. |
The new plastic-free poppy
1 Attachment(s)
The new plastic-free poppy.
From RBL website: "Available from October 2023, the new poppy is made from an innovative blend of renewable fibres from responsible sources and can be recycled in ordinary paper recycling collections. This is the first time in 28 years that a new poppy has been developed." In 1995 poppies with a leaf already attached became available , previously the leaf was an 'optional' extra. EDIT : Poppy with leaf attached was available from 1987 , in 1995 “Poppy Appeal” replaced “Haig Fund” on the plastic button. . |
This poppy is to be phased in and may not be available in some areas where old stocks are used up (such as my area) a new stick on poppy will be available as well.

Double standards ?
1 Attachment(s)
I know of a few English RBL branches who have been refused permission to produce their own branch badges because they wanted to include either the RBL logo or the RBL poppy.
Perhaps they should include a photo of this badge just produced for the Larne Branch. . |

It was in Canada , ordered on the 12th June and it arrived this morning 16th which is quicker than some of the UK items I've bought. :D . |
