Natal Royal Regt

All,I recently acquired a Natal Royal Regiment badge (bottom badge) that is not in any of my reference books.

I have seen another example before that sold earlier in the year and have included a 1903 - 13 collar badge (top badge) for ref /size purposes.

Anyone have any ideas on the badge .... collar?

Shahl,
What type of fixings does it have?

Is it lugged?

Normal lugs similar to the normal Natal Royal Regt collar above.

Hi Shahl
Tylden's book is quite helpful with this ,
"..From 1889 to 1895 the badge was an eight-pointed star with a bugle horn in the centre and a crown above surrounded by the title in a scroll; until 1903 it consisted of crossed rifles on a maltese cross with the motto "Defence not Defiance" and until 1913 of the Natal coat of arms on a Maltese Cross , with a collar badge of the British Coat of Arms over the Natal arms and the name on the scroll "

Your badge is the crossed rifles rather than the Natal COA . The lugs are east/west , so conventional badge wisdom would indicate that it is a cap badge , but who really knows ? It could be a collar but i suspect that the other badge that you have shown is the collar worn with this badge as the cap.
So I would like it for a cap badge worn for a few years after the ABW.
I have a similar badge, which is probably the one you saw on BoB a while back.
Keep well
Mike

Another Natal Royal Regt query

All, recently acquired the Natal Royal Regt cap badge in the picture. What makes it interesting is the lack of a crown. I have looked at it closely and there does not appear to be any evidence of one ever being attached.

What does everyone think?

Maybe a pouch fitting?

shahldm 05-04-21 10:59 AM

Perhaps, although the lugs are the same as that for a cap badge
