Ian, the two links to previous threads ( posted by Tim) regarding this badge, cover much of what is known. It is not made from any of the known die variations for the 6th Gurha Rifles arm badge ( which all have the cross of the orb attached to the hawk in any case).

My suspicion is that an officers collar badge die was used in error ( they are in facing pairs with orb separated from the hawk) for a short run. These badges then filter out over time. If they were ever worn is debatable.

The 14/20 Hussars wore the black and gold example from 1969 - amalgamation in 1992, so we can reasonably date it there. However it has been painted black and not manufactured that way. We know that some of the pre 1969 all gold ones were painted to save wastage so, that does throw a small spanner in dating it.

They are uncommon and nice to find. They will complete a set, if that is how you like to collect.

Attached my 14/20H for interest.

Regards all

Bess

Bess,
Thank you for the comprehensive information and the photos. I am mainly interested in collecting staybright badges in general. When an oddity turns up I like to find out its background history. Hence my gratitude to the members of this Forum that find the time to help in furnishing information.
Best regards,
Ian
