Some bits from my time in 63 Signals, Hope it's of interest.

Interesting Danish Para wings.

That's right, quite a few of the squadron members undertook the Reserve Danish Para course, (you didn't have to be para trained or have completed the "Q" test to attend it) There were also opportunities to undertake the Belgian Para Commando course and if you were para trained, you could go on Exercise "Honey gift" in the US and get your US wings.

What era are these?

1984-86 and 1996-97. The collars and shoulder title are not original as I had to give them back (and never actually wore them).

I never got issued any shoulder titles or saw anybody wear them

I never wore them, all the NCO's wore rank slides, the rest of us wore nothing. Think there was some idea of us having No 2's but that never happened either, No 2 shirt was about as formal as it got in my time!

Were you 63 or 264?

Did you have to do the course twice then due to the time between postings, or were you PSI?

Unfortunately Twice!, though second time was easier, didn't have to learn morse the second time and only had to pass at 6 wpm not 12 like the first time!
Squadron was changing though, it was absorbing a lot of guys from 10 para and changing a lot in its character, becoming a lot more like a Para regt unit, which didn't suit me personally! The Danish wings were never worn in the 80's, other than on track suits, British para wings were worn on jumpers and shirts but not on the SAS windproof smock that most wore, but in the 90's a lot of Para smocks appeared with foreign wings worn on the chest. I never undertook the para course, in the 80's only about 30% of the squadron was para trained!

I would have thought the tie would have been the 264 one? I knew 2 2Lts in the late 1980's and they wore the 264 tie at every opportunity! One ended up as OC 264 and retired recently as a Colonel. I am sorry to say that he was a dreadful big-timer!

The tie is just a standard Royal Signals one, just used to wear the 63 Signals tie pin with it! I rarely wore it as I went on to serve in the Infantry and have since only ever wore a 2 Wessex or PWRR tie.

Seeing this brought back some memories. I served in 1986 prior to joining up full time (Royal Air Force) in 1987, based out of Peronne Road. The physical training was tough but learning the morse was a nightmare!

Yeah, 12 words a minute! I was with C Troop at Peronne Road too, you must have been a couple of courses behind me, I was B319.
