R. Artillery cap badge
 

Hi all, I am looking to find an other ranks royal artillery cap badge. It needs to be of the type worn in 1914-18. Should it have lugs, loops, slider, 2 or 3 lugs, a blank slider. Thanks in advance.

This thread may help (the reference to "Short Slide (vertical shank) reinforced behind the upper scroll" in post no 1 refers to two small brass"horseshes" fitted one either side of the top of the slider).

The design was the same from 1903 onwards with the short slider. To be sure of a WW1 production type then you would want either the 1916 unpierced version or the 1917 with the wire reinforcement.

An Unvoided type
A short slider
A horseshoe type of reinforcement.

It's 2 types - the slider is generally the same length on all post 1903 types.

Without strengtheners fully voided, Solid unvoided economy and with strengtheners voided.

I think it depends what you’re trying to represent.

If it’s someone who marched off to war 1914 to mid 1916 they would have been wearing the standard RA badge with a short slider fixing.

As mentioned 1916 saw the introduction of the unpierced economy issue and 1917 the strengthen scroll type.

Not intending to sow confusion but perhaps worth a mention I own an example (and have seen others) which is unpierced and with the 1917 strengthening wire.

So ultimately you have a broad church of what you can choose to represent the RA during the 1914-18 period.

Thanks Luke, I am looking for a cap badge that would have been worn by a cadet in the artillery during the dates 14 to 18. He stayed in the uk during this time, and was 16 years old at the end of the First World War.
