4th and 5th Bns. Leicestershire Regiment

Not within my sphere of collecting, so looking to sell this photo in due course, but before so doing, I'd very much like to share the find with the forum.

Nothing particularly earth-shattering, but just nice to have a picture of this less commonly seen unit... 4th or 5th Bn, Leicestershire Regiment.

Cannot quite make out whether the July date written on the reverse says '1914' or '1917':

Kind regards,

Badge looks to be damaged-lost rear leg? Do the STs look to have a number but no T? Regards, Paul.

Looks like 17, to me, mate.

orasot 11-05-16 06:37 AM

Me being awkward, looks like 14 to me 😄

Tigerlily 11-05-16 07:24 AM

As it goes is looking a bit more like 14 to me too

I dunno... what am I gonna do wiv the lotta ya?

Call it 1915 & a half then to meet half way 😉

Chipper 11-05-16 07:47 AM

For what it's worth JT, I'm with the "14" crowd. 7's are not usually (at last for me) written with a down stroke seperate to the top stroke (does that make sense??)

One thing the French have going, is it's much easier to identify numbers. Oh, and cheese, of course, so that's two things..... ;)

As it is "JULY" 191X, the odds are heavily in favour of 1917, are they not?
Heavily!

magpie 11-05-16 08:46 AM

Defiantly 17, don't think much of his collar badge though :)

Tigerlily 11-05-16 08:49 AM

As it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind or be late or something I've gone back to thinking 17. Is there not a clue in his uniform? get Jon's book out. It does look like a swoopy 17.

Oh yeah just clocked the collar :D I want some like that. Will they be cheaper than my Tyneside Scottish collar?

Alan O 11-05-16 09:07 AM

I reckon it's 1914 because if it was 1917 then the uniform would be old pattern. He has the pleated pockets, brass T titles and the peaked cap with stiffened rim that suggest early war not latter war years. I would caveat with the fact that he might just be dressed in an older uniform rather than a newly issued 1917 one!

orasot 11-05-16 09:10 AM

Heavily yes, but wouldn't be the first time someone has written the wrong year on the back of a postcard, especially if it's done by a family member at a later date,
Wilf

Is the card marked Southend or Battersea - is that the maker or the photographer? To be honest without the date I would say it was a new recruit from 1915.
