A nice portrait photo of an officer of the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own). Ribbon may be a DSM.

Very interesting..... that is the "Rat Face" motto... a type 1 by the look of it. So this photo dates that motto earlier than WW2. To date I have yet to see an officer silver version .... so I can only assume that the one in the photo has a slider. There is a Wm looped E/W version as well... but it does not looked looped in the photo?. Is he an SSM?
Any chance of a higher resolution image of just the motto? |
Hi GriffMJ, away from computer at moment but happy to do some close ups tomorrow.

I think the medal ribbon is that of the General Service Medal (1918). The thickness of the outer stripes rules out the DSO.

Thanks for the input Hoot, I don't pretend to be an expert on medals and ribbons, and after having a closer look at the DSO ribbon I think that you are right, doesn't seem to match up with the DSO. |

Thanks Nick
It is the (My Ref) Type 1 "Rat Face" Motto, so this photo confirms its existence pre WW2. I say WW2 as it was seen again in WW2 as a an issue and usually found with the WW2 slider safety clip (for the beret) still with it. The photo you show above i believe to be a 17th/21st Lancer Squadron Sgt/Major between the wars. |
