VAD Cap badge???
 

I know this lady is the Commandant of the Springfield VAD Hospital, but am not sure what cap badge she is wearing. Is it some sort of Red Cross issued badge? Any idea of the time frame?

As peter said The BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY scroll reads INTER ARMA CARITAS red cross on white the examples that I have in V A D collection are pinned back Worn in the cap as your photo as most units only had s/t I only have 2 to the regiment that I specialise in
8/V A D /WILTS which was worn by Godolphin School a private girls school The headmistress was the commandant and the unit made up of staff and girls
V A D 40th WILTS -Biddestone[cloth title ] a very small unit only 25 strong commandant Mrs C Hedworth-Williamson

Don’t have my copy to hand but didn’t Ray Westlake in his shoulder title book say female VAD units had even numbers and Male odd numbers?

The only male member of the 40th Wilts was the chaplain rev H.E Ketchley I think it was the same for Godolphin school but can't find my notes at present

Hi Terry , due to your posts I have found myself checking out VAD items I come across while browsing for other items.

Here are three that caught my eye.

In doing further research on the VAD, I have been unable to find out what the two patches at the far right in Mike Vee's post above are, beyond being VAD patches. Does anyone know who, i.e. nationality, wore them and were they are shoulder/sleeve patch or a breast patch?

Does the card say which Springfield hospital it is? Red Cross records show three. Date-wise it will be circa 1914-1919, if we can pin down which one we can probably get more accurate.

Essex VAD
 

At a slight tangent, an example of the badge worn for Essex - presumably as a lapel not headdress. Pin backed and worn with a red felt backing.

I believe those two patches are post war (1950's) British Red Cross VAD pocket batches.

Great info Mike! Was it still worn on the breast pocket? I actually bought those two patches, so anything I can find out about them is helpful.
