WW1 Cloth Formation Signs Display
I do not believe that I ever posted this display board. It measures 2ft x 4ft. I had inquired once regarding possible era of manufacture and for what purpose. These follow the post WW1 Players cigarette card illustrations closely. The collection was put together here in the U.S. for display in the 1960's. The time of manufacture somewhere in that range or before is my assumption.A nice representative display. Each one of the signs is a small work of sewing art, quite well done IMO.

That's a lovely display and someone took a lot of trouble and care in making those badges.
I'm a dab hand at sewing myself and can see a lot of really nice hand sewing there. Well done indeed, and thank for sharing this. All the best, Roy. P.s. regards the nationality comment, I can most certainly agree with that. Growing up on the Welsh border (just 12 miles away) I can think of more than a few Welshmen that would not take kindly to being lumped in with us English folk..:) |

Many thanks for sharing, great collection. Is this a representation or actual patches do you think? I'm seeing khaki behind some of the badges, but not quite sure if this is for effect or where removed from a uniform. Would it be possible to get a close up of the 49th & 62nd please? Hello Andy, my best guess is representations. All of the backing khaki is the same material, which to me was quite a coincidence and making me think they were not period pieces. As I would have expected more variation.
The women who owned and assembled these boards was an active member of ASMIC for many years and has passed away. She was also a member of the Heraldry Society. My own feeling is these were made not to deceive but as representative examples. I will post some more photos, as the quality of the work is quite nice. great collection there although probably not period as you say, still some very good sewing by the lady,and a good reference piece thanks for sharing it,wouldnt mind owning it myself and i dont collect patches.

Top, top quality cloth patches, presentation board and images, the close ups are outstanding in showing the detail involved in their making. Thank you for showing them and any others you have, it makes me want to collect them now, ..... :eek::cool: It just to goes to show us, what artists there are out there, I'm in awe with the hard work and detail she has put into these. The 55th (West Lancs ) example includes an red outer circle which was not included on the badges worn on uniform.

Again, thanks to everyone for their positive comments. I hope to immunize myself from upsetting anyone regarding National identities by saying it was like this when I got it.:)
The women who had assembled these was 94 when she passed away. She had served in the American Red Cross in WW2 while her brother was a Fighter Pilot in the C.B.I theater of operations. Many of my most recent acquisitions have come from this collection. Thanks Marjorie. A few more if you will allow me. Being English, I am rather unhappy at being lumped into "British" ! Almost anybody these days can be "British" it seems, but English without any traceable component from the other tribes seems a bit rare these days. |
