27 & 28 Squadron RAF

2 Attachment(s)
Finally decide to sort through and photograph some of my badges. I attach a photo of my collection of 27 Squadron since it became Chinooks, including the flight badges and some unofficial ones.

The other is 28 Squadron, including the flight badges worn when it was the largest squadron in the RAF equipped with about 24 Merlin helicopters. The top row are 'A' (x2) and 'B' (x4) flights, the second row reads 'C' , 'D' , 'D', 'E', Sqn Tac, Hong Kong. The bottom 2 rows include further Tac badges including those from its sales tour of the US and crown badges inc the '28' worn in 2001 rather than the traditional 'XXVIII'.

I'll add more photos as I discover more badges in my collection and acquire more.

Aargh.
And now the photo it wouldn't let me upload. Hope it puts this one on the right way round.
It refused. See correction above.

2 more recent acquisitions for 28 Squadron. The first is a Tac badge of crossed black kukris the second is the new 28 Squadron FACS (Future Aircrew Clothing System) sleeve badge incorporating both the Crown badge and the Tac badge.

I hope to acquire more FACS, Crown and Tac badges, for 27 Squadron particularly, over the next few weeks (thanks to both Terrane and Squadron Prints web sales sites, in which I have no financial interest, but probably should have!). I will photograph and display them as received.

regards,

Some more photos.
The first is an American made rubberised patch, which the seller informs me was made recently for 27 Squadron. Anybody seen this in wear yet? Any photos?
The second shows 3 different Crown badges for 27 Squadron. Note the earliest one has the elephant in grey, presumably originally reflecting their time in India, which the Squadron then changed to green to reflect the use of Chinooks, followed by 2 different green elephants.
Finally a couple of patches produced for the 40th anniversary of the Puma helicopter which shows 27 Squadron as the Chinook/Puma Operational Conversion Unit (OCU), a role it took over from 240 OCU.

Some generic Chinook patches.
Firstly an unofficial "Battle of Bastion" badge, locally made in theatre in September 2012 when a Taliban suicide squad breached the wire at Bastion. Shows a Chinook with the phrase "When the flight line meets the front line".
Secondly 3 patches with Chinooks on. The first from crewmen on Operation "Provide Comfort" in Iraq in 1991 and other 2 commercially available during RAF operations in Afghanistan, including a reference to Operation Buzzard in 2002..

Two more from 27 Squadron.
Obviously designed to win the crew new friends in the Royal Navy (?).
I would guess they're either from 27 Squadrons tour on HMS Ocean in 2016/17 or from trips on HMS Queen Elizabeth more recently?
The Royal Navy have had to "borrow" aircraft and crew from both the RAF (Harriers, Merlins, Chinooks) and AAC (Apaches) for some missions.

and another 5 for 27 Squadron. These are the current FACS (Future Aircrew Clothing System) badges showing both the Squadron Crown badge and the Tac badge with the individual Flights on.
Thanks to Terrane for helping with these.

27 Sqn

Two more from 27 Squadron RAF.
the OP RUMAN'17 with International Rescue shows a Chinook looking very similar to Thunderbird 2, but with a number 27 on it's nose, based on what appears to be Tracey Island, The ssquadron was sent to the Caribbean for disaster relief in 2017. The person I got it from said only 75 patches were made.
The other patch is a slightly smaller woven nylon version of the standard square 27 Sqn Tac badge, but has the addition of "ENG" for engineering where the different flights in the squadron have previously added "A" "B" etc.

...and 2 more versions of the CH47 CHINOOK DISPLAY TEAM, 2018. One with white lettering and a full colour Union flag, the other with grey lettering and the full colour flag.

If anybody has 27 or 28 Squadron ( or 7 or 18, come to that), badges to get rid of please let me know. I know 27 Squadron in particular seems to produce a badge for every tour they go on, even if it's just lifting sandbags within the UK!

Further to my last post, the crown badge for 18 and 27 Squadrons, who both fly Chinooks, has turned up.
A spoof of the 617 Squadron "Apres moi le deluge" ( After me a flood) Dambusters crown badge, from the raid on the German Dams in WW2, this one has a Chinook on top of a 617 Sqn type dam, with the title "The Damfixers" , the motto changed to "Sans moi le deluge" (without me a flood) and 18 and 27 where the Squadron number sits.
This was made when the dam at Whaley Bridge was damaged by heavy rainfall on the 2nd August 2019 and RAF Chinooks dropped huge bags of aggregate to stop what would have been a horrific dam collapse.

27 Squadron & 1310 Flight

4 More badges from 27 Squadron, including, finally the 100th Anniversary one from 2015. Took me while to find one.
Also one with the words " Kathmandidn't " and "OP LAYLAND Static Display" which I think is where a couple(?) Of Chinooks were sent out to assist after an earthquake, but circumstances conspired against them and they ended up stuck on a runway until coming home.
The combined Pegasus and Elephant of 18/27 Squadron formed for a short while for operations, presumably using crews from both squadrons.
Finally "THE DEPENDABLES" and below "1310 FLT * AFGHANISTAN" another detachment operating in sandy , poppy covered or mountainous terrain.
