17th Lancers. Unusual construction.
 

I got this badge from an old frame of badges which seemingly was put together around the time of the Boer War. This 17th Lancer cap badge is of rather different construction to other examples that I have seen.
Can anyone throw some light on when it was made and by whom ?

Looks like a nice Victorian unmarked silver 'chad' or NCO's arm badge.

Hi Guys

I agree with Simon, in that its a 17th Lancers Arm Motto, probably made pre 1900. The Arm Motto or Chadd dates back to C1856 and comes in hallmarked silver, unmarked silver and white metal, with and without a back plate.

The Chadd was used in embroidered form following the amalgamation of the 16th/5th Lancers and the 17th / 21st Lancers in 1993 to the formation of the Queens Royal Lancers and up to 2014 when the amalgamation with 9th / 12th Lancers to form the Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths Own) when the use of an Arm Motto was discontinued.

The cap Motto is wider than it is high, where as the Chadd is taller than it is wide, also the shape of the Bones is different on the chad to those on the cap Motto.

That's a Nice NCO Armbadge to the 17th. It could have been carried over to 17th/21st Lancers in 1922.
It looks early to me I need to check my others but the swallow tail detail is quiet thick unlike later ones which are very fine. Rear plate construction is perfect for this type of Armbadge. I think this fits in around 1880 and is based on the Original type . As said I will check my collection ASAP.

I think it is a lovely old example, I certainly would have no issues with it.

I checked my collection its defiantly in my view post 1865 which is when we started to wear them. Its also pre 1906 When Bent and Parker started to supply a different shape. My guess would be around 1870 1880. When SNCO,S might want a second cheaper Armbadge for everyday working dress and keep their Hallmarked variant for parade and duties. That's just my 10 pence worth. It would also look very nice in my collection.
