Attaching a lug badge to a beret.
 

Hi Guys,

Can someone show me the inside of a beret that is designed to be used with a badge that has lugs such as the Royal Tank Regiment badge.

Normaly the beret has a piece of leather inside with a couple of holes to accomadate the luged badge failing this a piece of stiff card or plastic

In QDG we used to cut a circle out of the plastic spacers that came with MG ammo boxes.

I don't think I have ever seen a British beret actaully designed for use with a lugged badge. They are all made assuming that a slidered badge will be attached; generally with a leather backing strip to receive the slider. As stated above the soldiery often improvise a stiff backing. (or in the case of the para regt just stick it in the wrong place anyway and wear it like a flat cap......)

I think this is a modern trend. I always remember members of the Parachute Regiment in the 1970's wearing the badge in a uniform and correct manner instead of looking like members of the cast of the Muppet Show.

No doubt standards are slipping.

This should rattle a few chains if nothing else....

PS Alan and others - thanks for the Beret information - needed to see if lugged badges were issued with different berets from slider ones.

The RAF have holes in the beret for the lugs on their badge. Originally the Army berets had nothing at all, which is why you see some berets with the badge pushed through the air vent holes, this then places the adjustment tape which should be at the back of the head in the wrong place. A metal clip was issued to keep the badge in place (picture when I can find one).

At some time before 1951 the leather patch was added to the left front of the inside to acomodate the shank [slider] (which was to be the standard form of fixing, we know this was not adhered too), with the shank between the cloth and the leather the old clip was still to be used. Later in 1951 a second patch with an open top was added to the first, this was to hold the shank of the badge and a new clip was issued to fit snugly round the bend of the shank.

Hi Mate,

I always remember them back in the 1970's as Pte. A.Kelly,3rd Bn when as an Air Despatcher we both wore the Dennison smock.

The Para's were always pretty well turned out even in working gear with extra darts in their smocks to take in the excess material giving them a better fit and sewn in creases in their OJ trousers. We copied this tailoring too as we wore the same.

They were also a lot leaner then possibly due to the extra tailoring but I think people as a whole were a lot thinner even when a teenager when you compare with today.

Only the vets come anywhere close to wearing their berets properly - and even they have their badges centered behind the left eye.

The rules are crystal clear. Band level, one inch above the eyes, badge centered over the left eye, excess material pulled right over the ear.

And no I'm not a hat.

While in uniform I met this guy who one can only describe as being a total bleedin' nutter.

His ambition was to walk into the Para's mess after a they had been on a two week exercise and shout out:

"I thought only f***king fairies had wings" ...

I doubt if he will live long enough will collect his pension.

I think you'll find it's a platoon designator worn during training at Depot Para.
