Question regarding the Canadian General List Badge:
Was this badge given to all members who enlisted in the CEF?

Any information about the history of this badge or reference links would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bonnie, Are you speaking about the CEF type GS badge? There is another GS badge that was approved after the SWW.

Hi Bill, yes I was referring to the CEF GS Badge. Thanks for the recommendations and link. Looks like there were quite a few renditions produced by different manufacturers way back then. My search for knowledge continues...

Bonnie, In reference to your question about Crown Copyright, I don't believe it applies after a certain period of time. See this section:
12. Without prejudice to any rights or privileges of the Crown, where any work is, or has been, prepared or published by or under the direction or control of Her Majesty or any government department, the copyright in the work shall, subject to any agreement with the author, belong to Her Majesty and in that case shall continue for the remainder of the calendar year of the first publication of the work and for a period of fifty years following the end of that calendar year. [S.C. 1993, c. 44, s. 60(1)]
This would make most material dating before 1965 public domain.
To further muddy the waters, not all the badges were property or copyright of the government. Especially CEF badges. Many were procured by the units themselves and they held the the dies and designs. Only a couple of the badges worn during the period are in used today. (For example the RCR badge design is very similar. I would want to check with the PPCLI before using anything in their lineage.) The same can be said for king's crown badges. Many of their designs are 80 years old, the badges designs are heraldically incorrect, and again many of the units do not exist.
If you have other information, it would be good to be informed.

Bill, you are correct as referenced in section 12. This applies to any units no longer active or non existent. As for units that are currently active, the unit owns the rights to their badge, such as the PPCLI for example. I have spent the last 2 days researching and speaking with Intellectual Property advisors of the Directorate Materiel Policy & Procedures DMPP 8 to be sure that i understand this correctly.

As for the CEF images, the ones that are not in existence and over 50 years old, they would indeed be public domain now. I’m glad to have this confirmed as I have an idea involving the CEF GL Badge.

Not sure if you are aware, but I was very blessed to be involved with the PPCLI’s Century of Service last year and at their request, made 3 unique plates available to commemorate this special occasion. One of the plates featured their Marguerite Cap Badge. I’ll see if I can figure out how to post a photo here.

A truly wonderful day I will always remember. The unveiling of 3 special plates to commemorate the PPCLI's Centennial. These photos were taken during the French Grey Ball on Sept. 7, 2012.
