Almost mint condition Norfolk Yeomanry cap badge, still retaining most of the original gilt finish.
Hope its of interest, Tony.

Are you sure that the maker mark was used on genuine NY badge sliders Tony.

I have a niggling feeling they were not but cant recall why.

I hope so
Tony.

The maker mark is of the style considered to be genuine and I know of at least one (marked) which came off a WW1 trophy belt of genuine badges.

However I saw this on eBay last week...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/badge-cap...edirect=mobile

As the rest of the sellers items were restrikes or fakes I emailed asking if it was original since the condition listed was ‘new’ and the description claimed to be ‘makers obsolete stock’.

I received a reply saying ‘Bent & Parker was one of the oldest badge manufacturers’ and the badge was ‘certainly genuine’. When I replied saying the maker is Bodill Parker and that I’d asked because the rest of his badges were fake, marked as ex-stock and also listed as new I received a reply saying he ‘rejected my assertion’ his badges were fake...

All the badges the seller had up and currently has listed look duds to me. What are the chances he owned one genuine Norfolk Yeo badge? Seed of doubt planted?

That's the one Luke, agreed the rest of his offerings I wasn't impressed with but this one caught my eye.
If its wrong then the badge in post #1 must be too, they look identical to me.
Tony.

Not necessarily Tony. It’s not a fake. That badge definitely existed and was worn, period photos show that. What’s more a badge from this die is pictured in Wilkinson’s (1969) book and K&K.

Rather if* it is flying with fellow ducks so to speak then it’s a true restrike from an original die which has survived remarkably well sans die flaws. As such indistinguishable from a genuine badge... which makes it worse than a fake IMO.

Next deduction and concern is if it is a restrike a genuine BP&Co maker mark stamp seems to have survived with it!

The last point I’d make and perhaps it’s cause for optimism? The slider shape is identical to other genuine marked BP&Co badges. This isn’t a modern slider shape. So if it is new what are the chances of the original BP die, original BP MM stamp and unused BP slider stock turning up?

Only other alternatives are it was the one genuine badge this seller had OR it is unissued manufacturers stock like the description?

Worryingly yet another one... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/badge-cap...ad55%7Ciid%3A1

For when the link dies here’s a photo of the re-strike / ‘old stock’ (if you believe his pony story) next to one from Geoff Newman’s site. Geoff’s one clearly has some age and I wouldn’t doubt it as an original.

As you can see the badge is identical from the original die so a re-strike, also has same die cast appearance on the reverse, a correct BP mark and BP style slider.

The only slight difference I can see is the edges where the cypher crosses over appear blunter and less defined. On Geoff’s badge they’re sharper looking.

NY

Can I please confirm the terminology being used with regard to this badge?

If it is 'gilt' my understanding is that it is an officers' badge- it should not have a slider. Gilt is a metallic layer applied over a base metal badge to produce the high gloss finish. Gilt can often be ascertained as the reverse either shows where the gilt layer was applied, or where the gilt layer has worn off leaving a brighter reverse.

If is an Other Ranks badge, with a slider, and maker marked them I would call that Gilding Metal (GM) with is a brass alloy and needs polishing to achieve a high shine finish.

Stephen.

It’s not gilt it’s the factory finish. The badge is an ORs badge.
