Hi, I have this 1944 dated kangol beret. I have never seen this cloth badge before. Can anyone tell me if it is genuine or a repro

The badge in question is at best a blazer badge applied to the beret, at worst a fantasy badge. It is not a badge worn by the 1 Cdn Parachute Battalion. Officers wore bi-metal cap badges, and ORs wore the dark plastic cap badge. At the end of the war they were replaced by brass issues.

That seller has a lot of ‘theatrical replicas’ and mucked with items for sale. Also the infamous fantasy RNAS airship badge. And all seem to be selling well! :eek:

He is honest in his descriptions though, so the fools that buy his stuff have only them selves to blame.

Yes I knew the seller said it was a stage prop but I believe the beret to be genuine so it’s nice to take a gamble now and again….time will tell
I have not seen a cloth badge before and I thought it was very detailed for a stage prop hence my question on this site

There are a lot of 'punters' who buy up just about everything military they see and then show up on these forums looking for information and identifications; hoping for the 'jackpot score'. To be honest, this was my initial impression about your question. I don't invest my time in answering these questions and as you can see from some of the responses there is little sympathy for those 'collectors' who purchase material purely on speculation. I am not suggesting that you are one of these people but feel you go caught up in the wording of your question. Perhaps some of the posts may have been less pointed if you had worded your initial question differently providing more information such as that you had bought the beret off of eBay, as a replica, but believe the beret to be genuine and was enquiring about badge.

Just some thoughts,

I’ve bought many an item listed as restrike or copy, when in fact they were not and it was the seller who was ignorant of the reality. In such cases, me knowing differently is based on a great deal of research.

Taking a gamble can be worth it and fun, definitely, but be prepared for disappointment especially if the item is Special Forces or Airborne related.

From what I can see there may be cause for concern for that Kangol mark and date, but I’ll leave that to the beret gurus to dissect.

I would not speculate on anything this seller offers. Whilst his wording is accurate it is masked by the ex museum display piece which in my view is designed to lure in the speculator. He has been outed on a number of forums before he included the words replica so has changed his approach. If you want a replica so be it although I think that there are better ones out there otherwise save your money.
