He is wearing an RAF Chaplains collar badge on his lapel, strange as he is associated with Chatham dockyard.

Thank you, that is the reference that I found where he is described as a Champlain. I think that means that he was the best performer in the Chaplains' League that year. It was very close though and came down to the number of home goals conceded.
