If I remember correctly, there was and it's a large version of the blue yellow blue badge backing

Mike many thanks I of have 2 these approx 6.5 x6.5 cms which I had as the ''normal '' trf For some reason most likely incorrectly I thought that the drop zone flash the colours were diagonal yellow and with dark blue either side-could be just having a senior moment I'm looking at my P W R R boards and gap filling having just purchased the 4 unofficial company flashes as in Tim's album
David
Mike just had a look at Marc SHERRIFF book vol 1 page 35 some good information but nothing regarding the 5th airborne brigade

49lassiepen 27-10-20 08:16 PM

Even more confused -I know very little about drop zone flashes [have a book on them] and airborne troops In the new unofficial trf to P W R R I noticed that C company of 1 P W R R the lettering is maroon to reflect service in 16th air assault brigade of which 5th air borne was part Did 1 & 2 P W R R supply companies ??

I believe that when with 5 Airborne the D/Z patch was, as mentioned above, the Blue/Yellow Diagonal affair.

I would agree with the diagonal yellow/blue version. This followed on from the diagonal designs used by the RRF, 1 QUEEN’S then 1 R IRISH.

1991-1993 was a complex period as the PWRR formed in September 1992 from 1 QUEEN’S, 2 QUEEN’S, 3 QUEEN’S AND 1 R HAMPSHIRE. As only 1 PWRR and 2 PWRR were required from ‘Options for Change’ so there was a series of re-shuffles and cross postings. The battalion at Howe Barracks, Canterbury supported 5 Airborne Brigade.

16 Air Assault Brigade formed up in 1999 from 5 Airborne and 24 Airportable Brigades.

Don’t be misled by this one which is of the design worn by the King’s Own Fusiliers when in 5 Airborne Brigade (Soldier Soldier on the Television!)

Hi David,

A diagonal blue and yellow flash was definately worn post 1996. I was in what was then 6/7 PWRR and remember seeing them. Whether it was blue over yellow or vice versa, I cannot recall. We are about to move house and once we have, I'll dig out some regimental journals and have a look.

KR,

Pete

24 Air Mobile Brigade?

grey_green_acorn 28-10-20 08:26 AM

Pete,
Yes 24 Air Mobile Brigade. Why titles change is sometimes a mystery. My first posting in 1970 was to 16 Parachute Brigade!

Perhaps to finalise, if I may quote from Marc's (54bty) book:

"A woven Drop Zone style patch divided diagonally upper left primrose yellow, and lower right blue, with a blue merrowed edge.

Colour, circa 1992, worn on the right sleeve of the combat smock by members of the 2nd Battalion from 1992 to October 1995, and by the 1st Battalion from October 1995 as part of 5th Airborne Brigade. Size 63mm x 63mm".

I attach a picture of PWRR LZ flash in use in the late 1990s, plus one of the original Queens Regt LZ flashes - note the construction - not the factory made merrowed edge version. Lastly a picture of a beret worn by PWRR officer as part of 16 Bde HQ staff c2004.
