4th and 5th Border

Did the 4th and 5th Bns of The Border Regt maintain their distinctive cap badges into WW2 or did these go the way of other Territorial distinctions in 1917?

I cannot say whether they went in 1917 or later but I do not believe that they were still in use in WW2. Kipling and King show them in Vol 2 ie post Great War but to be honest the book is not infallible and I think alot of the TF badges should not have made it into Vol 2.

4th & 5th Border, etc.

I must agree strongly with Alan Owen. The 4th and 5th Border Regiment badges had almost certainly gone by WW2. Very few Territorial units retained their distinctive badges beyond the end of WW1. Remember also the TA reforms which brought infantry units into searchlight or anti-aircraft units- far removed from their original functions - and requiring re-badging to RE or RA. I have always accepted that we said farewell to TA badges in their original form by 1920. I would be very interested to hear other informed comment on the subject. Regards to all. David

The cap badges of the 4th Border and the 5th Border were made obsolete by Army Order 198 / 1917, ratified by the Army Clothing Dept on 27th November 1917.

Many thanks for these replies. I thought there might be a possibility that the badges made it into WW2, but the weight of opinion appears otherwise. The 4th Border remained very much an infantry bn, serving in Tobruk and Burma with 6 Div/70 Div, while 5th Border briefly became 110 Regt RAC in 1942-3before reverting to 5 Border.

With respect, it is not "weight of opinion" - it is fact !
