Moving to the Rockies
3 Attachment(s)
Hi Gents,
For those of you who know me and/or are interested, I thought I would share some news. My wife and I are leaving New Mexico and will be care-taking an incredible lake-side property in the Vega State park high up (8,000 feet) in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Heading there in about two weeks. I'm reasonably confidence the internet signal will be fine. We are so far out of town there is no mail. so will have to head into town once a week. No doubt I will have to develop just a little more patience for my incoming buttons. A couple of pics to share. Cheerio, Roy |
Looks wonderful, I am sure you will struggle through. A great place for contemplation.
My wife and I have discussed fire lookout stations out west. 5 months out of the year you are up in lookout. Groceries etc are brought too you. It appeals to us for the peace and quiet. After long careers in sales it is just what we need. Jack |
Looks absolutely amazing. Best of luck with the move Roy!
Cheers, Luke |
Thanks Chaps,
It looks like it will be bit of an adventure. But we are excited at the opportunity. We are heading up right in time for the snow, so will have to tog up.. Cheerio, Roy |
Hope the top floor windows open so you can get out after the first snowfall.
Enjoy your new adventure Roy. Mark |
Good luck Roy, that place looks amazing.
Andy |
Looks good, Roy.
All the Best for your move. John PS Don't get cabin fever. |

Wonderful looking place Roy, enjoy, best regards

Very nice Roy, looks like I will have to rug up well and truly next time I visit if its in the winter
All the best with the venture. Dennis |
Thanks Guys,
Yes Dennis you certainly will. We have lived up in the Rockies before, so it's not a total unknown. Although this location is a little higher up and more remote, so we are mentally preparing for an 'adventure'. Luckily I have a large garage for my Triumph but I'm not expected to get as much riding in as I was hoping. But who knows a nice sunny day and I could take a turn around the lake..:) I might even give 'ice' fishing a go, no what's something I haven't tried before. Cheerio, Roy |
Good luck, Roy
Looks like a lovely place, I must say, if a bit remote. Have fun! Sunil |
you do get about Roy
looks amazing. all the best mate bc |
Very nice, Roy.
I love the view of the lake through the trees but I wonder how long they will stay standing! A few feet of snow and you may need to get your chainsaw out and have those trees down for fuel - I take it that you have a log burner for heating etc! Can't imagine that you are on mains gas or even electricity? Roger |
Your a lucky man Roy !!! I am sure you will enjoy every bit of it !!
Have fun and stay safe !!! Steve |
You only live once and it’s good to see you are embracing the opportunity that has been presented to you. I find myself quite envious. Colorado is a beautiful place to be. Enjoy.
|
Looks amazing, Roy! Good luck!
Cheers Colin |
Roy, that house looks fantastic and I'd love to live in the Rockies. I hope you're happy in your new home and area. Just remember, every morning when you look out of your window how lucky you are. despite mail problems...

Hi Gents,
Many thanks indeed. We have use of the big cabin but also have a smaller place next door. It is an incredible location. I may even try my hand at 'ice' fishing! We are hitting it right at the start of the winter, so it will be a shock. Should be some interesting wildlife too, bears, mountain lions etc. My wife is already calling dibs on my .357 revolver.. Should have some cracking photos to share once settled. Cheerio, Roy |
new home
Hi Roy,
wishing you good fortune in your new home. Any militaria fairs up there ? Mark |
Hi Mark,
Not that I know of. Grand Junction will be our nearest big town, about an hour away, I will be sure to check. Cheerio, Roy |
Its O.K. but it isn't Shropshire. :)
|
Its a whole new lifestyle - it will have many challenges but fantastic rewards. The scenery looks amazing. Enjoy it and create memories.
Mike |
Thanks for all your kind words gents.
In the last throws of packing now and the moving truck is booked, picked it up on Sunday for a Monday move. Still having problems sorting the internet out but fingers crossed. Will be sad to leave northern New Mexico but a new adventure awaits... Missing all my free time for projects, this packing lark is like a full time job:( Cheerio, Roy |

Hi Gents,
I'm pleased to say we have arrived safely at our new mountain home (pic attached). We are on the western slope of the Rockies in Colorado 8,200 feet up next to a lake. We just got internet hooked up. Having to go back to a landline telephone as really no cell signal way up here. No post either, so have to have a PO box in the tiny post office in the near by one street town. Really looking forward to getting some recent button purchases delivered over the coming weeks. Cheerio, Roy |
Great to hear Roy! Hope you’re settling in well, I’m sure you’ll be very happy there.
Looks cold, glad to see you’ve lots of firewood ready to go! Cheers, Luke P.S. if you find an old beat up F&S up there remember me ;) |

Thanks for that Luke,
Yes it's a little 'fresh' up here but sunny with stunning views too. I'm sure it will get a lot colder but we are finding the wood burner is doing a grand job of keeping us all cozy and Lilli has found here spot in the morning sun next to the fire. I do have some F-S knives coming in shortly, not sure what they are but fingers crossed. I still have a few more SOE items to list when I get them unpacked. Now we are settled I can finally have a small collection of buttons I have been buying sent over, so really excited about that. It gets dark here really early so I anticipate very long winter evenings, just perfect for inspecting and organizing my button collection..:) Cheerio, Roy |
Looks great Roy, enjoy yourself.
Ps. This Country is getting worse, don't rush back. Andy |

Thanks Andy,
It would be challenging to come back as my passport ran out years ago.. Although a little fresh outside (like Brit weather) I took a short ride and took this pic, our new place is pointed out by the arrow. Cheerio, Roy |
I'm sure you'll never have to worry about traffic Roy!
Enjoy the solitude. Does wonders for the soul, though I guess badges would come a close second. Cheers! Sunil |
Roy, we’ve chatted before on PMs, never remembered you mentioning a Triumph in your collection but MY God, what ever happened to yours? This from a “Purist” driving a ‘94 Sprint 900! Seriously, Good Luck in your move. Stay safe and warm. David J.

Thanks David,
Yes, that's my baby..:). Started of as a stock Bobber Black but it now has a few upgrades including a Speedmaster tank and headlight, so I guess it's a hybrid. Still got lots of plans for it down the road a little as time/money allows. I've been fortunate enough to have owned some cracking bikes but this beauty beats them all. A couple more pics from my ride yesterday. Let's see some pics of your Sprint David? Cheerio, Roy |
Smart bike indeed.

Thanks for that Andy,
I love it. Although not going anywhere today as we woke up to our first snow so somewhat snowed in today. Although the views are spectacular. Cheerio, Roy |
Hi Roy
Ive just found this thread, man that's a great move. I love the snow country although ours is not on this scale, but I do have shares in a ski club down under. Enjoy mate, are you taking the Black Out ? Something for shooting bears, maybe if that's on the agenda or allowed. Love the photos and Lilli is in place for the winter. Roy its a hard life but someone has to do it so it might as well be you as its not me !! Good one mate, enjoy your move. Regards Phil. |
Hi Phil,
Thanks for that mate. I'm not a winter sports person but I might be tempted to do a little ice-fishing in the lake later on. We had someone drive by on a snow-mobile today, never had that happen before. I'm not a hunter Phil but this is certainly bear country, so never leave the house without something on my hip..;) We do have a very serious snow-blower on site, so I better get to grips with how to use it. I think it will be a long winter... Cheerio for now, Roy |
OK on the sprint shots Roy, will have to dig some out. By the way, just had some pics sent to me today of the first shoots for this winter in the Canadian Rockies. The R.C.A. Have started their averlanche control program in support of Parks Canada. Basically, When Parks Canada assess the danger of an impending averlanche, they send the co-ordinates to the regiment, close all roads and passes, The 105s do their stuff, P.C. Clear the debri and re-open the roads. It’s listed as the world’s largest averlanche control system. All the Best, David J.

Hi David,
That's fascinating. Must be quite scary indeed to even think of an avalanche, something I hope I never see. The mountain road here goes through some really precipitous canyons and although I don't think avalanches are too much of a problem, there is a real danger of rocks falling (some the size of a house), roads washing away (by the looks of the repair that happened last year) and wildlife. Just the other day coming back from our first shot a whole heard of mountain Big Horn sheep came of the steep mountain side and ran right in front of our jeep. My wife was so excited you would have thought she won the lottery. Cheerio, Roy |
