hi all
a mate of mine recently picked this badge up in a deal. he has asked me to Id it but there is no info on a google search so i'm coming to the experts.
i dont think its military but it does have a kings crown so i'm assuming some official govt capacity pre 1953.
also it looks like the mine was possibly being mined through WW2 for uranium which may have been used for the bombs dropped on japan.
im assuming its missing some number from the middle but any information would be appreciated

It has all the look of a Algoma Mine security guards cap /breast badge......missing the guard's number.....

The Quirke Mine is an abandoned uranium mine located approximately 13.5 km north of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated and is currently undergoing environmental monitoring.
The mine was in operation from 1956 to 1960, and again from 1968 to 1990, during which time it produced 44 million tons of ore[citation needed] from two separate shafts.

The Kings crown surely makes it pre 1953.

As Jo said, it is a security guard badge, likely Scully made for the Algoma Quirke mine. The pattern is a generic design which was modified to include the appropriate name. Sometimes the centre device was a number, other times it was some other device. The mine didn't open until 1956, so the use of a king's crown is a bit of a mystery.

There is a makers mark - SCULLY ?? MONTREAL

...as you wrote...a generic design...Scully only had to add a company's name, cuts down on cost of making a specific badge every time an order comes in....
As for the crown.....well old stock from pre-1952/53....

The blank space wouldn't necessarily contain numbers. In the example shown in this page from a vintage Scully catalogue (stock item #202) they include the title "Chief".

I have had some information that the mine was actually in use during ww2 mining uranium. The uranium was being shipped to the USA for the nuclear experiments. I was told the mine closed shortly after the war only to reopen in the 50s.
I don't know where this information came from or if it's actually speculation
Anyway thanks guys for your feedback.

That can't be BC. Uranium was not discovered in the Elliot Lake area until 1953. The uranium for the atomic bombs came from the Eldorado Mine on Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories.
