Naval but who ?
 

hello,

here are two old naval badges, obviously connected to Royal Navy !

but for what subsidiary services ? :confused:

= construction and scheme are pre-1920
= one read NAV and NNV

any idea of the bearers ?

Agree NAV could be Naval Artillery Volunteers but every reference I've seen says that it should have the letters RNAV and all pictures I've seen have RNAV.

Could the NNV badge be a South African badge - Natal Naval Volunteers?

Ps just a thought but the NAV badge could also be South African as I believe they had Naval Artillery Volunteers

First, many thanks for all your suggestions.

For the NAV badge, I had for long the track on the ROYAL NAVAL ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS.

But as said by Paddy, all sources to mention R.N.A.V. on badges ...

see Cdr MAY with two versions described :
= 1873 -gold anchor & silver laurel leaves
= 1887 - 1891 : silver anchor & gold laurel leaves

The main problem with this badge is so :
The RNAV unit was disbanded in 1891 ! as consequence its badge was crowned by the State Crown of Queen Victoria and had no reason to show the Imperial Crown of 1901 !!!

About the NNV badge, many thanks to all who give me the track to NATAL NAVAL VOLUNTEERS.

I did not know this unit and was happy to learn more about the subject ...

According to internet sources, the Natal Naval Volunteers (NNV) was established in 1885 as a coastal artillery unit tasked with defending the port of Durban.
Then this unit was renamed the Natal Naval Corps (NNC) in 1904.

So my officer badge with the Imperial Crown should be dated only between 1901/1902 and 1904 !!!
A very short period for a very tiny unit with less than 10 officers (including surgeon and paymaster !)
<<In October 1899 the NNV's numbered 123 all ranks and were commanded by Commander G. Tatum.>>

What a big chance for me to discover this badge (alongside with the NAV) in the 90s at a fair market near Paris !!!

You are absolutely right with Cdr MAY reference book :
It contains only a very precise description of the RNAV badges (P.105)

But the description was so accurate that I have taken the liberty to produce these two RNAV sketches by a transformation of one RNR 1891 and another victorian 1879 badge - thanks to photoshop !

This was done long time ago in order to complete my private documentation and in no way to abuse someone ...
Hope this will be considered as a venial sin :o

Natal Naval Volunteers uniform button
 

I believe this is a uniform button worn by the Natal Naval Volunteers during the Boer War. I have not been able to find another image of one despite an extensive search of the Internet.

The cap badge in question is Naval Artillery Volunteers.
The 1889 and 1895 Dress Regulations for Defence Force of New Zealand state that the cap and buttons are to have the letters N.A.V. The badge matches the description found in the 1895 dress regulations.
On the 19th December 1903 the N.A.V. were reformed into the Garrison Artillery. Technically these N.A.V. badges with a Kings crown were only around for 2 years in New Zealand, but I am sure they were worn for longer.
This does not precluded another country with a N.A.V wearing the badge.

As a result , a very old badge (1901-1903) for a very short period and certainly very tinies units ... what a piece of chance for my collection !!

I do have a copy of the Dress Regulations, but they are not on line.

My current project is a book on the 'New Zealand Dress Regulations of the Militia, Volunteers, Permanent and Constabulary Forces 1852-1909'.

So you will have to wait for the dress regulations.

I am looking for a photo of a N.A.V. button and any other NZ items form the period 1852-1909 if anyone can help.
