I bought this very cheap a few months back and I know it is a cast copy and appears to have been cast using a broken badge for the mould, but how old is it likely to be, is the enigma of it.

Welsh Horse

As Griff says, Gallipoli, Egypt & Palestine December 1915 to March 1917, this is the problem with sand cast badges, it could be 100+ years old or made last week.
I never pay much for sand cast badges, although I have a few, could be right or not.

The fact that it's cast from a broken badge may be in its favour, squaddie breaks his badge, only one he's got, gets one cast from it.
Then again, you'd think one of his mates could supply an unbroken one to get ta copy made.

Do remember that WH badges were provided by the unit and not the Army so they was no WW1 equivalent of an NSN.

Griff I’m sure you’re aware the MY in GM on your graphic is a fake. Notwithstanding I have never seen or heard of a genuine MY example in GM and highly doubt they exist, rather I’m certain they don’t.

Also Julian’s research shows in 1916 the WO placed an order for 3,000 Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, sealed pattern 549/1915, in GS (German Silver) i.e. WM.

thanks for all of you who have taken the time to comment.

It was only £4 and seemed worth it even if only to see what it looked like.
