Date of hallmark?
 

Hi All
I just bought this badge but can't id the date of the hallmark, can anyone help please? It looks like a Birmingham mark but the date letter shape doesn't seem to match any of the B'ham patterns.

I thought this was Firmin at first but now I think it must be Fattorini & Sons.

Fattorni and Sons Ltd, date letter D ? Its either 1903 or 1928 imo. And Birmingham.

I do have to say that it bears a strong resemblance to the Birmingham Assay date for 1879.
I have no idea whether this fits in with other evidence but the similarity is very strong. I would certainly agree that it is Fattorini.

1903 and 1928 marks were in a shield shape and all these marks are in an octagon. With the anchor lying on its side I would say this is either an old English O for 1888 or more likely an old English V for 1895.

Thanks guys. Steven, I think you've nailed it, it must be the one for 1895. Not very well formed but that 'V' is the closest to what is on the badge.

I would doubt that it is, at first glance that particular fifth cycle mark is very different, but, then what else can it be.
There is no gap whatsoever at the top of the date letter in the first photograph in the original post, which do not have the wear that the hallmarks in the second photograph have and are far more distinct.
It would be interesting to see the reverse of the badge.

The closest I can get it using my pocket edition “Jackson’s Hallmarks” is 1891, but you must view the Gothic date letter punch mark upside-down – not an uncommon practice I understand.

A Birmingham fifth cycle "q" would actually be 1890-91.

I'm going with Birmingham 1890, myself.

Appreciate the input but I can't agree with the 1890-91 dates as the letter is clearly shown in an oval but mine is in the octagon shape, still agree with 1895.

I’m in the 1895 camp too.

Luke, your image is much better than the one I was looking at, I was going on the upside down theory too. Seeing this, I am switching camps. 1895.
