Hi All
Some recent finds, with some questions:
1 - Early RAF senior NCO's badge - Can you confirm it is RAF and not RNAS?
2 - Early RAF officer's cap badge.
3 - Looks like a WWII economy badge, cotton embroidered. It has the date 12-?-44 written on the back. I've never seen an example like this before, any info on it? It has holes in which look like somebody fitted a metal eagle over the embroidered one, which has been removed.
4 - Unusual padded example of a WO's badge.
5 - Clerical badge - no idea but am told it is RAF.

No 4 is not what you think. This badge was introduced in 1918 as an economy version of the Officers cap badge. It was worn by an officer who wanted it to look more like the standard badge, hence the backing. I have seen pics of it being worn by junior Officers.
At that time Warrant Officers wore an Officers cap badge as well. It was only later (1920ish) that it became the WO badge only. In my collection I have one with a full embroidered crown and the bottom of the metal version, all mounted on black cloth with padding.

No1 is RAF, no red cushion in the crown. No2 is the first pattern 1918 cap badge by Gaunt.
No3 is very unusual and not one I have seen before. Possibly Indian made??

Many thanks for the replies, a better haul than I thought then! Very chuffed with the ID of number 4!
I am going to try and carefully remove the glue from the back of #3 to see what the writing is, may give some clues.
