Opinions on 96th Foot Glengarry badge please
 

Any opinions on this badge would be appreciated. I am not a fundi on Glengarry badges and picked up this one for £2-00. I obviously expect to hear that it is a repro at that price but am using this as a learning exercise for myself. If it is a repro what gives it away so I know what to look for in the future.

Yes, its a fake.

the main thing that gives it away is that there are always about 12 or more for sale on ebay at any one time and have been for many years.

Apart from that its wrong colour, completely worn away die and extremely poor quality.

The VAST majority of these Victorian Glengarry badges are apparently bad. From what I am gleaning, these badges were among the earliest of restrikes and many already over a century old.

The 96th ones started appearing in the 1970's and are still with us.

I always look for bronze lugs on these not coper

From what I am hearing on this forum, brass (bronze?) lugs are not always a guarantee either.

Just from the photographs, I would have said a fairly typical example made from the wrong materials and manufactured in a different way than the originals, which are not that common.
The value of original ninety sixth are, sadly, undermined by all the recent spurious examples that have been made for over a generation now.

I have got into trouble before on the Forum because, shock, horror, I actually collect pre- 1881 restrikes and have about 80. Too late and too expensive to hope to collect originals and when looking for the missing ones I mainly find restrikes listed at a high price as original.

I think it is still realistic to collect original examples, but, to actually collect them all is now time consuming and certainly expensive, to complete a collection would be very hard indeed these days.
