Ditto.

I am having trouble seeing the text in the attachments; they're a bit small. Am I the only one, and would slightly larger scans be too cheeky a request?

Regards,

JT

Many thanks for posting this particularly the bit on Defence Companies and the armband worn, I have one of these but always assumed it was something to do with Div HQ's but your post gives a positive identification as Defence Companies 1939

The image of CSM Clarke is interesting - a rare sighting of the formation sign worn by the so-called 40 Inf Div in 1943. The formation was raised in Sicily from Overseas Garrison Battalions and L of C units. 40 Inf Div was raised to add to the Order of Battle in Sicily at the time when 50 (N) Inf Div and 51 (H) Inf Div were being withdrawn to UK to join 21st Army Group. The signs were locally made - a brown accord on a white ground - the design was inspired by the complex formation sign of the WW1 40 Division - which incorporated a bantam cock (as later worn in Korea), a white diamond and an oak leaf. 40 Inf Div comprised just three battalions - 30 R Norfolks, 30 Som LI and 30 Green Howards - each battalion representing a brigade.

Same for me Jelly (old) bean! I even downloaded one of the text attachments, but it didn't help I'm afraid. Thanks to the Rob for showing us though :)

Sorry that you’re also having trouble, but relieved it’s not just me.
