1700s naval lieutenants button, if you are thinking of selling it I wouldn't bother as it's not in a condition that would appeal to many ;)

It's become a common error to label those pewter buttons with rose impressions as naval or naval officer. As Dixon Pickup told me The facts are these, in 1748 the Admiralty issued their first Dress Regulations for officers of the RN, included in these were descriptions of the GILT (and always gilt) buttons to be worn by, Officers of Flag Rank, Captains, Commanders and Lieutenants. Greenwich have a near full set of these first patterns.

They are just fancy pattern georgian buttons i find piles of them and in coventry im further from the sea than any other point in england.

these are my finds but these are the types commonly sold on auction sites to (boost prices mainly) as naval buttons when in fact they are civilian cufflinks or rose decorated buttons.

Thank you very much for the identification, I had one person saying it was a military button and another saying it was trash. So thank you for confirming. Never have any intention of selling any of my finds I'm a hoarder of things I find lol.

I don't think these objects are ever trash. The trouble with early buttons are i think for a long time they have been neglected compared to coins and a fair few other archaeological objects. Archaeologists in the UK anyway have not seen 18th and 19th century as early enough and it is still hard to get those centuries recorded on the national database of finds. I run a group on facebook for militia and volunteer buttons of the napoleonic period as virtually nothing bar howard ripleys books and the non updated early military button website exist to help id those buttons. With metal detectorists help i'm managing to I'd quite a few of these buttons.
