To be fair, the seller is not a badge dealer. Unfortunately, he has purchased a very large collection of badges from a collector who gave little thought as to what he bought as long as it filled a gap and would have badges made to fill a gap that in all probability never existed. I would keep an eye on his listings as there are one or two gems and more than a few that you will find interesting to say the least :D

Many years ago when I started collecting 1973 I had a file on odd badges At that time I asked Sid Fisher who had a stall at Bowden Hall military fair about the badge in post one ,his reaction even then was surprising the same as Keith'sI suspect only a few older members will recognise the name

The design of the Middlesex "Footballer's" seems to date back to at least around the early 1920's although the Meer & Jones poster hasn't been properly dated and I don't know if the illustration is of a badge that was actually produced and / or sold by them at that time.

Interestingly The Leeds Pals badge they illustrate is the "earless" owls (Corporation?) design.

As we are fast approaching one hundred years on from that time these badges which we deride as fantasy items or fakes were produced, they will soon be antiques in their own right, not that I will be buying any of them.

The badge is a cast copy of a firmin badge so not real which would have been cast originally with lugs not added later as you'd normally do, I have the same badge in silver to the public works Battalion, I was told about 20 years or so ago the name of the dealer who made these, I was also told by someone else he had hundreds of badges hanging on his garden fence getting some age in a short time.

And What The F... is the Middlesex badge shown to the left of The Footballers.

Further to Magpie's reply, many years ago I was offered an OSD of The Footballers...................................hmmm mm can't remember why I didn't buy it.:D:D:D

Apart from the fact that nothing that I know of or have been informed of supports the belief that these badges were ever produced for service wear; if they had been, they would have been totally impractical.

The ball on stalks would have been toooooo long to sit comfortably on a cap and in fact I suspect the ball would have broken off very soon after being placed on the cap.
