Is this right? Newfoundland badge.
 

Hi all,
I've recently acquired some WW1 CEF badges, and amongst them was this Newfoundland badge. Forgive my lack of knowledge, I was wanting to know if it is a genuine piece.
My concern is the flat back. The badge is 38mm across by 32mm high.
Any insight greatly appreciated.

Short answer, no it is not a First WW Newfoundland Regiment badge.

Can we see the reverse please.

Thanks Bill, not sure what that means, but all I can see is that the old link starts with ttps and yours with https. Regarding the badge, if the 'plated' back version is post WW1, is it a collar for the regiment which was granted Royal status after WW1, and had a new cap badge?

The Royal Newfoundland Regt of First WW vintage was disbanded in 1919. The Royal Newfoundland Regt of the Canadian army was authorized in 1949. The collars were from that time period on. (Several different issues of them.)

Thanks for your reply John. Hard to know where to ask about this badge being as it dates before becoming a Canadian province. Originals seem to be of some value. Respecting the regiment's Great War service I had hoped someone might have some pointers to what is good and what is bad. Does not seem much detailed info on the forum. Regards, Paul.

I believe the eBay badge is fine, it may however have a replaced loop. For a genuine example expect to pay £90+. Some dealers will charge considerably more though.

There’s no fake die á la Martin Marsh catalogue as such but there are cast copies. Two typical examples attached. Several threads on the forum discuss these, one point I look for is the ‘N’ that merges into the scroll border. There are genuine badges which have this feature but in my experience it’s present on all the copies. Notwithstanding it’s a good indicator you need to look closely at it badge overall and back if it’s there.
