QARANC or QARNNS?
I watched an interesting documentary about the 1980's Falklands War and it got me to thinking about the nurses who would have served aboard the HMHS Uganda. Would they be QARANC nurses or QARNNS nurses or both?
Thanks, Terry |

Uganda had a three-day refit in Gibraltar where a helicopter platform, fittings for replenishment at sea, satellite communications and wards and operating theatres were installed. Two additional water distillers were fitted on the sports deck. In accordance with the Geneva Convention she was painted white and eight red crosses were painted, two on each side of the hull, one facing forward on the bridge superstructure, one on the upper deck visible from the air, and one on either side of her funnel. A team of 136 medical staff including 12 doctors, operating theatre staff and 40 members of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service, left Portsmouth to join her taking large quantities of medical supplies with them. Yep Jerry, that's excellent. I knew the Uganda went through a quick refit, and in fact was on a cruise when needed so the passengers were put ashore in Italy.
Your details are excellent and definitely answer the question, plus some! Terry |
QARANC or QARNNS?
There's a nice bit of footage on Youtube of the SS Uganda and the QARNNS nurses returning to the UK at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6FowyYMokg The nurses appear at 2 minutes 15 seconds, but most of the footage is about them and the Uganda. Pete |
Pete, that is an excellent piece of footage and I loved seeing the nurses uniforms! Had not even thought about checking YouTube, so thank you very much!!!
