Illustrating Armageddon

1 Attachment(s)
Gentlemen,
My wonderful wife bought this book as Christmas present. The illustration on the front cover of the book is a wonderful photograph.........except for the fact that it is not a photograph. Fortunio Matania was an artist with a photographic memory and many of his illustrations were pencil drawings. When you first glance at the page you think initially that you are looking at a photograph.....except you are looking at a drawing! I promise you, this is a stunning book and one which will appeal to anyone with an interest in the First World War. The book ‘weighs a ton’ but every page brings a ‘wow’ to the lips. Do yourself a favour and buy it!

That illustration on the cover is of Fr. Francis Gleeson (the unit chaplain) administering General Absolution to the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers on the 8 May 1915, the eve of the Battle of Aubers Ridge. The battalion was making its way up the Rue du Bois to the front lines to take part in the battle the following morning.

Will look out for the book.
