Hi Gents,
I can add:-

South Notts Hussars
3rd Carabiniers DG
Royal West Kent
DLI
KOYLI
The Welch Regt
Pioneer Corps (QC - 1st pattern)
APTC (late pattern slider)
RAOC (late pattern slider)
RADC (late pattern slider)
RCT (late pattern slider)
Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (late pattern slider)
5th Inniskilling DG
13/18 Hussars
Green Howards (2nd pattern) - (late pattern slider)
RGJ (late pattern slider)

* by late pattern slider, I mean a marked differance to the very early s&w sliders which were soft font with a shiney rounded edged slider. Later type has a flat slider with a clearer stamped differant font lettering. I'nm sure you all know what I mean.

I'm sure I have some more, but these for now.

Regards all

Bess

Thanks Guys,

Bess, looks like you have been checking out sliders!!!

Yes, the two common are the 'old' and 'new' and I have managed to identify five different S&W sliders so far.

Note that the 'old' is tapered and the 'new' takes on a modern apperance - why is this?

Regards

Chris

One to add to list. Just bought/received a Royal Tank Regiment-RTR anodised badge by maker S&W Ltd (Smith & Wright Ltd) I did not know this one existed so a good find. Unfortunately there is slight damage to it i.e. one lug missing but it will do until I find one in better shape. :)

Is ROYAL BERKSHIRE on any of these lists? I have one in my collection.

I have six (so far) for the 17/21L... number 6 is the odd one out but has a very similar outline shape to the later Shaw Munster.

From Andy's Welsh Guards album... there should be a couple more with different back images and maybe the MM going down the slider. Also the older smooth rounded end slider?

The interesting point with the Smith and Wright example of the Welsh Guards AA cap badge is that the die is different to all the other makers (of which there are several). In the S&W badge the 2 smaller leaves at the top centre (4th & 5th) are stuck together and adjoined to the 3rd leaf in from the left. On all other examples the 2 smaller leaves are free and point out longer. If you compare this example to all others you'll see what I mean.

Have never seen the earlier softer S&W slider on the Welsh Guards AA cap badge, but you never know! The more scarce example has the metal slider riveted on - I believe a Gaunt example similar to that seen on the REME, RE and early Queens Regt? Happy to be corrected.

Regards all.

Bess

Not having badges to hand - the Smith & Wright Welsh Guards longer, seperate central leaves badge, this is a variation on the "standard" Guardsmen & Drummer's badge, it's not the Sgts & Musician's version?

Personally I don't think so, no. If this badge were a variation it is way too subtle to be immediately or easily noticeable. If this were the case, would it not be found by other makers too, like the Scots Guards is? Its just a makers die variation I believe and they all have slight differences (most common is the root ball on the Leek which is different on most of the makers) - the S&W example just seems to be the most immediately visible.

That is very nice too, actually just seeing anything Welsh Guards with a makers mark is nice!

Hi All

A new Smith & Wright Ltd, back image, motto for the collection. Making eight mottos with different backs.... to date.

* looks like it has some old varnish on the front. That's easily removed by leaving it in acetone.

CORRECTION to post #23 :-

Having received the Motto it is, in fact, a duplicate of an existing back image that I already have.

If anyone is interested in buying it .... PM me :)
