RASC sand cast

4 Attachment(s)
Gents, I've had this peculiar RASC cap badge for many years. Is it just a peculiar copy/fake? Or is it something more interesting like a theatre made sand cast badge? The slider is unusual as it has an arrow head cut at the tip.

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

Regards all.

RASC

I would say theatre made, probably in Egypt.

Thanks Rob, I suspected something like that, but not my area.

Thanks mate

I'd heard that these were made in the "soukh" to make up for supplies that couldn't be easily obtained but also they were cheaper than paying the "kit deficiency" for a lost badge that had been traded with someone for a badge you wanted.

See? There were collectors way back then!

One hopes it was ever thus!

GVIR RASC cap badge

For reference a GVIR RASC cap badge, formerly belonging to my late uncle who joined the RASC before transferring to the CMP, made in India and stamped "Industrial FV. Aligarh".

All the best

Bess, Rob,

I’m far from versed on theatre made badges, however, the ‘pointy’ slider of the first badge reminds me of a similar slider infrequently encountered on specific Indian cast 25th Dragoons patterns.

That’s a lovely cast RASC badge, Graham.

Best,

Marcus

Very similar pointed slider, thanks Marcus. I know very little about these 'theatre cast' type badges, but they're very interesting.

Thanks all

Bess

Hi

Thinking about your mention of sliders, I have, somewhere, a common cast NZ cap badge with an industrially strong copper D profile slider. Came with other WW2 items.

What's this? Do I hear word of approbation with regard to "cast badges"?
So many of these badges were made, mostly in India, but elsewhere as well, which are generally dismissed and under appreciated by the more sensitive in this hobby.
I realize that it can be difficult to determine just when many badges of this type were made, but a little experience will usually suffice to sort this out.
All the badges presented here are as historically valid as any.

There was a cast badge project thread started some years ago.

Very interesting thread! Some very funky badges there!

What is amazing is that whilst crudely made, some of them don't look too bad to be fair.
